Art shaped the design of this 4,000-square-foot Houston residence, guiding Bilal Rehman Studio’s approach to material, scale, and composition. Concrete wall panels establish a tactile architectural backdrop, their quiet rhythm punctuated by an oil-spilled metal disc whose reflective surface brings movement and depth to the space. Beneath it, the Flos Taccia lamp introduces a sculptural interplay of glass, metal, and light, forming a considered arrangement with the slender console. Warm wood flooring softens the concrete, while transparent glass railings preserve the openness of the interior and uninterrupted views of the art. Throughout the home, this dialogue between raw texture and polished form creates a setting where everyday objects carry sculptural presence and art remains central to the experience of each space.

Designed by Bilal Rehman Studio in collaboration with Casa Materia Studio, the conversation pit brings an intimate gathering space to this Houston residence. Deep upholstered seating sits within crisp white frames, its soft gray tones echoing the concrete wall panels beyond. A wood-clad ceiling lends warmth overhead, while expansive glazing draws daylight across the textured upholstery and carpet. Suspended above, a Flos Noctambule pendant introduces a delicate vertical rhythm, its stacked glass forms balancing the low, grounded proportions of the seating. Paired stone tables and patterned cylindrical bolsters add sculptural character, continuing the home’s dialogue between art and function. The result is a quietly expressive space designed for lingering, where material contrasts give a restrained palette depth and presence.

A custom terrazzo fireplace designed by Bilal Rehman Studio anchors the living room, its recessed border and flecked surface lending depth to a restrained architectural composition. Against this rectilinear backdrop, a Zaha Hadid sofa sweeps across the space, introducing a fluid silhouette that feels sculpted from a single gesture. Cassina Utrecht armchairs in chocolate leather bring richness and angular definition to the arrangement, their expressive profiles balancing the sofa’s curves. A one-of-a-kind rubber sconce commissioned from Brian Thoreen adds an unexpected material presence, casting a warm glow beside the fireplace. Beneath the seating, a softly contoured rug echoes the room’s flowing forms, while wood floors connect it to the surrounding interiors. Together, these pieces extend the residence’s art-centered approach, creating a living space shaped as much by individual works of design as by the relationships between them.

In the second primary suite, a palette of cream, warm wood, and soft gray creates a restful setting rich in tactile detail. Wall panels designed in collaboration with Casa Materia Studio line the space, their closely spaced vertical relief catching the daylight that enters through expansive corner windows. A fully upholstered linen bed introduces softness, anchored by Bilal Rehman Studio’s Tabby nightstands. At the foot of the bed, two Herman Miller chairs form an intimate seating arrangement, pairing exposed wood with striped upholstery that echoes the rhythm of the surrounding walls. A sculptural stone table brings natural variation to the composition, while a generous rug lends warmth underfoot. The room carries the home’s emphasis on expressive design into a quieter register, balancing carefully chosen pieces with the ease and comfort of a welcoming retreat.
